大哭一場

聰明今天把一年的初等微積分做了總結，引了好幾段文字。日本一位 Fields Medal 得主：「數學就是見本質的功夫」。俄國數學家 Gelfand 自問自答：「What is Mathematics?」「Mathematics 和 classical music、poetry、philosophy 有共同的本質：beauty、simplicity、exactness、crazy ideas。」Gelfand 並（在 2003 年）預測：「十到十五年後，數學將全面改觀」。聰明也引了 William Blake 那段不朽詩句："To see a world in a grain of sand / And a heaven in a wild flower / Hold infinity in the palm of your hand / And eternity in an hour"（一沙一世界 / 一花一天堂 / 握無窮於掌心 / 窺永恆於一瞬）。最後讓同學提問，為「數學系的招牌課程」高等微積分打廣告 :)。喔，從去年就確定了，高等微積分是不能不「聽」的 :)。（聰明解釋「招牌課」：「修習高等微積分的精神和態度就是在訓練 professional mathematician 的態度」。）

說來實在奇怪，若 CSIE 沒有出現，我十之八九現在是個數學系學生。CSIE pulls me in，yet I cannot find beauty which is comparable with that of Mathematics. 這就是 "God's call" 嗎？I wish I can somehow make some differences, the more significant the better. And I think I've seen where my next step should be. 在邁步之前，我想找個時間好好地大哭一場，哭完後好堅定上路。
