  17. Bought teabags and sugar to make black tea myself - a little more than 1 litre at a time, refrigerated. So it's ice black tea, to be precise. And then there can be variations, one of the most natural being, of course, ice milk tea. This is going to significantly cut down the budget on drinks.    [2011-01-03 13:57:48 +0000]
  18. Catching a cold while not yet fully recovered from indigestion?!    [2011-01-03 17:07:25 +0000]

  24. The stomachache seems to be persistent, even though it is not as severe as when it began. I will have to see a doctor... a few days later.    [2011-01-08 21:30:46 +0000]
  25. I met my GP yesterday and he still thought my stomachache problem, though certainly uncomfortable for me, is not severe. He prescribed some stronger medicine and told me to visit him again for some tests in a couple of weeks if it does not get better. This whole business is really disturbing...    [2011-01-12 13:46:27 +0000]

    • S************ ⇒ Sigh... thanks for all the help.    [2011-01-13 00:21:25 +0000]
  27. I feel better today but there is no guarantee that it won't get worse again. The most disturbing effect of this stomachache is that the working pattern I developed before Christmas has been severely disrupted and it will take some effort to rebuild the pattern again.    [2011-01-13 14:29:04 +0000]

[2011-01-14 16:19:13 +0000]
  29. I still cannot concentrate on my study and my morale is falling rapidly. Last night was yet another terrible, painful night. How can this stomachache problem be so persistent? I must consult the doctor again tomorrow.    [2011-01-16 16:42:30 +0000]
[2011-01-16 17:07:16 +0000]
    • 施** ⇒ Your mom cares so much about you that she called me and ask me what I can do for you~~(spiritual support I guess XD) How's your situation now?? Do you have a specific diagnosis?? Take care especially when you are in a nation without Taiwan's general health insurance!!    [2011-01-16 17:11:51 +0000]
聖誕節隔一天去 JR Hospital 急診,醫生開 Gaviscon(非處方藥)和 paracetamol(止痛藥)給我。
[2011-01-17 04:24:29 +0000]

@Y-T: I look forward to your visit! (And I hope I will have recovered then to receive you...)    [2011-01-17 15:44:43 +0000]
  30. I felt suddenly better this morning but went to see my GP anyway. He took some of my urine and blood for testing and told me to continue with the medication before the results come back next week.    [2011-01-17 12:47:03 +0000]

[2011-01-17 14:20:28 +0000]
  31. It is possible I underestimated the pressure I experienced, although I do not think there was too much. But I am rather sure I will have a lot of pressure if my study keeps being disrupted by this. Right now I don't have motive for doing almost anything.    [2011-01-17 16:06:19 +0000]
    • C*********** ⇒ Take care and take it easy.

I think I have a similar problem that I cannot sleep well if I am too stressful , which makes me sleepy next day and makes me even harder to finish my task.

My suggestion is that having a talk to a positive guy face to face and tell him/her you current concern. It would be better with merely telling your problem to some others.    [2011-01-17 16:45:06 +0000]
    • L************** ⇒ Take care of yourself. If you need anything from Taiwan, please feel free to ask. I will visit you soon after I come back. Don't feel stressed because of medical problems, it only makes things worse.    [2011-01-17 17:37:36 +0000]
  32. Fast recovering, again (meaning it can well get worse again). Evidence: The desire for music comes back.
    • Josh Ko ⇒ The last time I had iTunes play any music was 6 Jan, which was 11 days ago!    [2011-01-17 23:59:55 +0000]
    • Josh Ko ⇒ However, it is still unknown when I can feel easy enough to start trying to play Polonaise-Fantaisie.    [2011-01-18 00:05:58 +0000]

  34. I am well enough to continue with realisability! Wonderful!    [2011-01-18 13:09:36 +0000]  [ 2
    • L********** ⇒ Take care    [2011-01-18 16:35:47 +0000]
  35. If I can comprehend Paulin-Mohring's paper on program extraction before the weekend (and the stomachache does not come back), I will book the music room and play the piano for at least 2 hours, perhaps 4.    [2011-01-18 18:35:26 +0000]
  36. In Paulin-Mohring's paper the definition of the realisability predicate is essentially missing... (In constrast, Bernardy's paper does have a definition but contains very few explanations.)    [2011-01-18 21:48:24 +0000]
    • Josh Ko ⇒ s/constrast/contrast/    [2011-01-18 21:52:25 +0000]
    • L************** ⇒ Btw, I suddenly realize the definition of lawvere theory and they become natural to me now. May I try to explain to you sometime? Interested?    [2011-01-18 21:52:54 +0000]
    • Josh Ko ⇒ Certainly. How about arranging a meeting either in Birmingham or Oxford shortly after you come back?    [2011-01-18 21:54:20 +0000]
    • L************** ⇒ Oxford is definitely more interesting.    [2011-01-18 22:24:17 +0000]
  37. Oh no, the stomachache is coming back slowly...    [2011-01-20 21:08:59 +0000]
    • W************ ⇒ 呃 ...    [2011-01-21 16:52:02 +0000]

    • S************ ⇒ How is it related to Galois connection?    [2011-01-21 13:22:59 +0000]
    • Josh Ko ⇒ From the keyword "Galois group" I guess it will be more like the classical Galois Theory, which relates Galois groups and field extensions. There is one mapping sending Galois groups to extension fields and another in the opposite direction, and these two mappings form a Galois connection when the Galois groups and the extension fields are ordered by inclusion. That's basically all I remember...    [2011-01-21 14:28:26 +0000]
    • L************** ⇒ Galois groups and the extension fields are ordered by inclusion and reverse inclusion respectively.    [2011-01-25 03:08:24 +0000]
  39. Bernardy's definition now works for me. An intuitive explanation of what it does remains to be found.    [2011-01-21 14:48:45 +0000]

    • Josh Ko ⇒ But I have a vague memory of giving Jeremy a 5-pound note and receiving a pound and a penny back... This can merely be my imagination, however.    [2011-01-22 19:11:47 +0000]
    • Josh Ko ⇒ What I remember vividly is that I was occupied by the desire to get back to NCSL as soon as possible, my stomach seriously aching.    [2011-01-22 19:13:51 +0000]
  41. The relationship between realisability transformation and algebraic ornaments is becoming clearer!    [2011-01-22 20:30:49 +0000]
    • L************** ⇒ Hum? Model and theory?    [2011-01-22 21:43:58 +0000]
    • Josh Ko ⇒ Not sure. I have only explored a little bit of the relationship so far and certainly haven't found a good way to describe it.    [2011-01-22 21:47:36 +0000]
  42. The doctor said the test result was basically normal but seemed to indicate infection somewhere. I am going to take the urea breath test on Friday afternoon. 58. Struggling to break the circularity...    [2011-02-08 16:00:15 +0000]
  59. To upgrade a function f : List A -> List B to its vector version, it is straightforward to construct : (n : Nat) (xs : Vec A n) -> Vec B (length (f (forget xs))), which ignores the input length and reconstructs the length after f does its job. The problem suddenly seems to be solved. Am I missing the point...?    [2011-02-08 21:33:43 +0000]
    • T*************** ⇒ Does return a type (Vec B m), or a value of that type?    [2011-02-08 23:44:46 +0000]
    • S************ ⇒ It appears that returns a value of type Vec B (length (f (forget xs))), where forget has type Vec A n -> List A.    [2011-02-09 00:40:37 +0000]
    • Josh Ko ⇒ Yes, exactly.    [2011-02-09 07:13:52 +0000]
    • S************ ⇒ I worry about the connection between n and length (f (forget xs)). Is the length of result of f inferable without n? Or is n not lost at all?    [2011-02-09 07:36:18 +0000]
    • Josh Ko ⇒ However n is just the length of xs, so no information is lost?

Another example is how to derive the plus function in the type of vector append (m : Nat) (xs : Vec A m) (n : Nat) (Vec A n) -> Vec A (m + n). We would use 'length (forget xs ++ forget ys)' as the last index according to the scheme, and indeed length (forget xs ++ forget ys) = length (forget xs) + length (forget ys) = m + n.    [2011-02-09 07:50:38 +0000]
    • T*************** ⇒ Assuming (Vec B k) returns an empty vector of size k, I can see that Josh's definition is fine but then I am confused by the meaning of "upgrade". loses all what have been returned by f.

If A and B are type variables (as in O'Caml and Haskell) in the signature of f, I guess is OK as f can only (?) diverge or return an empty list. But when B is a type constant (like int or unit), this is no longer true.    [2011-02-09 07:57:12 +0000]
    • Josh Ko ⇒ Oh, I was not aware of the degree of parametricity in f and that was not something I intended. Please regard A and B as some fixed types (say Nat) and imagine there are functions in the context that manipulate A's and B's.    [2011-02-09 08:05:47 +0000]
  60. "The proof that the length of a concatenation is the sum of the lengths of its pieces currently requires us to observe a coincidence, when it should rather be the direct consequence of an ornamental construction." Hmm...

  63. The doctor said the test results are all normal. (So I think no H pylori, in particular.) He prescribed Lansoprazole 30mg daily for six weeks, and will refer me to a specialist after two weeks if I feel it does not work. But he was quite sure this is going to work. Hmm... Indeed my pain is going away, albeit slowly. (I feel okay now, for instance.) I'll try the capsules for two weeks then, and see whether it works.
